Street Fashion Brands Shaping Kenya’s Fashion Scene

For years, the Kenyan fashion street has been dragging behind in terms of creativity and diversity. According to statistics, a huge percentage of Kenyan youth get their pieces through thrifting shops such as Budget Wear, Think Twice or the Instagram page Thrift Boulevard thus equating to “mitumba.” The lack of flagship stores might be a huge contribution as to why we have to rely on second hand clothes to make a fashion statement. Despite this there is a zero to absolutely zero chance of having a copycat in your outfit…well unless you are heavily monied to shop at LC Waikiki or Mr.Price where your shirt comes in all sizes.

Luckily over the past five years, we have experienced a change in magnitude when it comes to fashion, especially Streetwear brands.  From upcoming stylists such as Luca, to designers such as Brian Babu and even accessory wielders such as Adele Dejak, the fashion industry has become more diverse, inclusive and ubiquitous. While the growth is mostly credited to the upcoming creatives, we can’t fail to recognize the symbiotic relationship between fashion and music. Just as there has been an upward trajectory in the fashion industry it has reflected on the music industry and other aspects of culture.

Just to understand how important the black man is to fashion, Anna Wintour, Vogue’s Editor In Chief recently announced the 2025 MET Gala theme and co-chairs. Influential Black figures from fashion, sports, and entertainment. Pharrell Williams, LeBron James, Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, and Lewis Hamilton will take the reins alongside Anna Wintour.  Their involvement underscores the celebration of Black designers, creatives, and icons who have consistently redefined and elevated menswear, using fashion as a platform for statements that go beyond style, reflecting political, social, and cultural realities.  With the theme  'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,' the exhibit is set to explore the powerful legacy of Black dandyism, a fashion and cultural movement that stretches far beyond sharp suits and fine tailoring, it’s about how fashion has been used as a tool for self-expression, empowerment, and defiance by Black men across the Atlantic diaspora.
